Pyridium, known generically as Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride, is an over-the-counter medication primarily used for the symptomatic relief of urinary tract discomfort. It is effective in alleviating pain, burning sensations, urgency, and frequency associated with irritation of the lower urinary tract due to infections, trauma, surgery, or catheterization.

Dosage Forms and Strengths

Pyridium is available in two strengths:

100 mg Tablets: Reddish-brown coated tablets imprinted with "PD 180".

200 mg Tablets: Reddish-brown coated tablets imprinted with "PD 181".

Both formulations contain non-medicinal ingredients such as carnauba wax, cornstarch, and various colorants (D&C red No. 7, FD&C blue No. 2, FD&C yellow No. 6) among others.

Mechanism of Action

Phenazopyridine exerts a local analgesic effect on the mucosa of the urinary tract. Although the exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, it is believed to block pain signals from the nerves to the brain, thereby decreasing the sensation of pain and discomfort during urination.
