THE PERSONALITY:

Hardship hones depth. Looking out onto the peaks of the Langeberg Mountains these vines are anchored in almost solid bedrock. Roots dig down into the cracks of petrified terroir in search of moisture and nutrients, a struggle resulting in small grape bunches with tiny, dark berries. From these berries, grown and matured in the harshest of soils a rich, silky wine flows.

TASTING NOTES:

A Black Red color. The nose expresses aromas of Cherry tobacco, dried berries, plums, leather, cigar box and black pepper. On the palate you will experience flavors of cranberries, coriander, dark chocolate and bitter expresso.

FOOD PAIRING:

Biltong, lamb shank, oxtail, chilly, chocolate, steak.

TASTING NOTES:

Delicious sparkling wine with fruity aromas of pear, pineapple and citrus.  Fine bubbles with bright fruity flavors and zesty acidity. Enjoy this wine chilled as an aperitif or pair with seasonal fresh salads or seafood.

The Collection range of wines aspires to be easy drinking, but also true to its terroir. The emphasis lies on fruit-expression of the specific cultivar.

VINEYARD:

Drip-irrigation ensures optimal ripening. The vines are planted on south facing slopes in soils consisting of weathered granite on clay and benefit from the cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean (False Bay) during the ripening season.

GROWING SEASON AND HARVEST:

Post harvest 2023 Stellenbosch had a cold winter with above average rainfall and sufficient cold units for the vines to rest. Slightly warmer temperatures end Aug led to even budding and slow initial growth. End September saw strong winds and heavy rainfall which slowed things down again. No significant amounts of rain towards Feb. With these conditions harvest was about 10days earlier than normal. White wines show good intensity and reds of high quality. Overall, the yields were down by 10%.

VINIFICATION:

These perfectly ripe grapes were gently pressed to avoid any harsh phenols. After settling, the juice was then racked, fermented at cool temperatures and left on the fine lees to enhance depth of flavor.

TASTING NOTES:

This fresh, fruity style of Chenin Blanc show prominent guava fruit aromas, green apple and punchy tropical fruits like pineapple with a nuance of jasmine. The palate is textured with a crisp and lingering finish.

SERVING:

Enjoy this wine chilled (5-8°C). Perfect aperitif and pairs well with a variety of foods, including seafood dishes like chili, lime and coriander prawns, or smoked salmon & dill crème fraiche.

Cool and mild weather conditions prevailed until end Feb, which pushed the start of harvest out by 14days to the norm. Vineyard stresses were minimal and fewer irrigation cycles was needed. End of Feb and through Apr there were a few hot spells broken up by cool days in between. These conditions led to cultivars ripen on their own time. Harvest only finished mid-April and crop yields were normal with the later varietals (Cab/Shiraz) down by 20%. Wine quality was very good overall.

GROWING SEASON AND HARVEST:

Stellenbosch had another really good winter with sufficient rain and cold for the vines to rest and build up reserves before the start of bud towards September. The inspiration behind the Reserve range is to create wines that are fuller and more complex in style. The use of oak plays a dominant role in adding complexity. These wines are best enjoyed with food, but good fruit /wood balance means they will also not disappoint on their own.

VINEYARD:

Vines are drip-irrigated to ensure optimal ripening and trained on the 5-wire Perold trellis system. Planted in soils consisting of weathered granite on clay, the vines are situated on south facing slopes. The nearby Atlantic Ocean (False Bay) has an additional cooling effect on the vineyards during the ripening season.

GROWING SEASON AND HARVEST:

The Western Cape in particularly Stellenbosch had a real good winter with sufficient rain and cold for the vines to rest and build up reserves before the start of bud towards September. Cool and mild, windy weather conditions prevailed until December, which pushed the start of harvest out by 14days to the norm. These cooler conditions led to concentrated flavors with natural acidity, good color and ripe tannins. Harvest finished first week April and crop yields were down by roughly 15% to a normal year, but wine quality looks very promising.

VINIFICATION:

Grapes were harvested around end-March from two different clones. Berries were crushed and cold-soaked for about 48hrs and then inoculated with selected yeast to bring out the best of the varietal. Fermented in stainless steel tanks with pump-overs (aeration) every 4 hours to extract flavor and color from must. Fermentation takes about 5 days at temperatures between 24-28°C. The wine was matured in older 300L French Oak barrels for 12 months.

TASTING NOTES:

The wine has a deep, dark, ruby red color with classic blackcurrant, blue berry and cedar nuances on the nose. The palate is filled with plush cassis fruit and dark chocolate-dipped cherry. A full-bodied wine with smooth tannin structure that can be enjoyed now but also improve with further bottle maturation.

SERVING:

Serve the wine @ 15-18 degrees Celsius, enjoy with charred grilled burgers or pasta in a rich creamy sauce.
