THE STORY:

Skebenga or Skollie roughly translates to gangster, bandit or scoundrel in South Africa and particularly well known in Western Cape, where gangs are very active. We wanted to have a very “capey” label for this Cape blend, which must always have at least 20% Pinotage in it. Africa’s only indigenous red wine cultivar Pinotage was cross pollinated from parent grapes Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Cinsault). The Skebenga blend enfolds all three varieties into a harmonious, delicious, juicy and spicy mélange of Cape goodness. An elegant, well-rounded wine with soft juicy tannins, the nose offers sweet spices, sour cherry, red tea & sugared orange peel following through with gentle vanilla oak and a slightly smoky charcuterie savoriness on the palate, ending with a lengthy and lingering aftertaste.

MESSAGE OF HOPE:

By drinking this wine, there is also a message of hope to the communities who live in crime ridden Cape Flats, where gangsterism are rife. We have partnered with Edward Ackermann’s NGO (non-profit organization) called Light Life.  Edward, himself an ex-gang leader is ideally suited to help brings change the lives of people living here and especially the children, who we want to safe from a life of crime.

  • TERROIR: Rooted in deep decomposed granite over clay soils on the slopes of the Helderberg a mountain south of Stellenbosch, the vineyards enjoy the refreshingly cool breezes from False Bay (Atlantic Ocean) during the hot summer days, and cool mountain winds during the evening, resulting in a unique freshness in the wine.
  • VITICULTURE: The vineyards have been specially selected and are meticulously cared for by hand and the crop is reduced to ensure maximum quality. All the vineyards are also hand harvested on the different days that Jasper decides it has optimum ripeness.
  • VINIFICATION: Grapes were sorted by hand, before being fermented in small bins. The different batches, separately undergoes naturel fermentation (no commercial yeast added) and the skins are punched down in the must by hand (peagage), where after it is pressed to barrel, where it undergoes natural malo-lactic fermentation in specially selected combination of matured French oak barrels. The art of elevage was practiced for 16 months, where after it was meticulously blended to a harmonious unity.

TASTING NOTES:

  • HISTORY: This wine is dedicated to a group of 30 Italian Immigrants that came to South Africa in the mid 1800 to start a silk industry near Knysna. They were highly skilled and came from the northern Italian town of Como, many of them from families that have been silkworm farmers and silk weavers for generations. They were coaxed to South Africa by the Colonial Government on the insistence of Lord Barrington with promises of land, free passage, and the existence of a Mulberry Forest in the Gouna hills near Knysna. Little did they know that the wild Mulberry trees were totally unsuitable for silkworm farming and that the area they were located to, was untamed forest, full of Elephants and other wildlife. They were devastated, but in spite of not getting further help from the government and having spent all their savings, they persevered, with many ending up having to work as loggers, wood workers etc. in order to survive, making their exceptionally soft hands, a requisite for the silk trade, into hard callous hands used for hard labor. Like the Robollini’s, many of their progeny today still live in the Knysna area.
  • AROMA PROFILE: Sangiovese, the classical Italian red grape variety derives its name from the Latin Sangius Jovis, meaning “the blood of Jupiter”. This wine is a rare Stellenbosch interpretation of the medium-bodied Sangiovese grape. On the nose, the wine shows dark berry fruit and a warm glowing hint of spice. Flavors abound displaying warm cedar wood, black cardamom and a rich mulberry finish that lingers lusciously on the palate. Well-rounded, grippy tannins make for a wine which is accessible now, but with enough structure and balance to age and reward well in years to come.
  • TERROIR: The soil the vineyard is planted in, is made up of decomposed granite over clay and on the lower southwestern slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. This vineyard enjoyed the refreshingly cool breezes from False Bay (Atlantic Ocean) during the day and cool night air flowing down the mountain, resulting in even ripening of the berries and good natural acidity. The macro climate is maritime, with cold wet winters and dry, warm summers.
  • VITICULTURE: The hectare single vineyard vines are meticulously cared for by hand to ensure maximum quality. It is grown on a unique Italian trellising system called “Pergola or Tendone”, typical and traditional in many parts of Italy. The fruit was handpicked on the 6 th of March 2017 in small lug boxes to ensure that perfect and undamaged grapes reached the cellar.
  • VINIFICATION: At the winery it was twice selected and sorted to ensure only the best berries made it to the fermentation vessel. Extraction happens by way of pigeage, or by hand punching down the cap of the fermenting grapes into the juice. This is carefully monitored to prevent over-extraction. The wine was fermented naturally or without the use of commercial yeast, no fining agents, and no filtration. This wine was matured in French oak barrels for 15-16 months and is ready for drinking now but will continue to develop over the next eight years. We recommend decanting the wine prior to serving.

  • TERROIR: Sourced from a single block on a South-West facing slope on Saxenburg. The soil is largely decomposed granite with sandy and clay pockets, synonymous with the Polkadraai Hills. The block was picked in different portions to ensure optimal ripeness was achieved. One portion was picked earlier to bring freshness to the final wine. Sandier soils gave rise to a grainier tannin whereas the clay gives a beautiful velvety tannin to the final wine.
  • VINIFICATION DETAILS: Hand-picked grapes from a single vineyard fermented spontaneously and with Syrah-specific yeasts to promote maximum cultivar and vintage expression. Portions of this block were whole-berry and whole-bunch fermented. A softer extraction method was used with 3 pump overs done per day.

Fermented separately in open-top fermenters, a combination of punch-downs and pump-overs were used, with most of the extraction focused on the first half of the fermentation. After the fermentation was completed, the grapes were gently pressed and underwent natural MLF in the tank before being transferred to barrels for 12 months.

  • TASTING NOTES: Subtle tropical fruit blossoms on the nose with nectarine, Chinese white pear and honeycomb notes and fresh citrus adding to the bouquet. There is a fresh citrus entry to a full mouthfeel and a final honey-like finish on the palate.
  • WINEMAKERS COMMENTS: Due to a high rainfall and cold winter conditions during 2023 the vines budded evenly at the beginning of the 2024 season. This also resulted in an earlier and condensed harvest period. The 2024 vintage also brought some challenges with higher humidity and warmer February days, leading to lower acidity in the wines. This Chenin displays beautiful stone fruit nuances of peach and nectarine. It has a smooth entry, a broad mouthfeel and a vibrant acidity giving it length.
  • TERROIR: Sourced from 2 separate vineyards planted on a South- West facing slope on Saxenburg. Both vineyards are on the typical coarse granitic soil synonymous with the Polkadraai Hills. The two blocks were picked in two different portions, with one picked earlier to bring freshness to the final wine. The 1st pick is from the younger block bringing freshness to the wine. The 2nd pick came from the older block and added a deep structure to the resulting wine.
  • VINIFICATION DETAILS: Grapes were destemmed and received skin contact for approximately 2 hours before gentle pressing. After pressing, both components were left on the gross sediment for 24 hours for added mouthfeel and texture development. After racking the different components were moved to different combinations of stainless-steel tanks and older oak barrels. In total, 10% of the wine was fermented in older, neutral, oak barrels.

The Saxenburg Syrah Select is an incredible wine, truly worthy of the Saxenburg Syrah Select label. Dark and brooding, the nose is a concentrated medley of fresh dark berries, salty liquorice, oyster shell, and black pepper. The palate is full, but possesses beautiful brightness, with a wonderful lift of fruit on the mid-palate. The mouthfeel is long and lingering, and the tannins are fine, but provide just enough grip to the back of the palate.

  • WINEMAKERS COMMENTS: The ‘SSS’ is the pinnacle of Saxenburg Syrah. This wine is only made in vintages we feel confident can stand up to the legacy of the wine and is made in extremely limited quantities. This vintage was a tricky vintage, but careful management and planning in the vineyard during harvest made it possible to extract phenomenal quality out of the fruit. This is the smallest bottling of ‘SSS’ ever.
  • TERROIR: Sourced from selected parcels within one block that was planted in 2002. Most of the block is south-west facing, with the uppermost section more westerly in aspect. Careful canopy management ensures a balanced and even ripening crop.
  • VINIFICATION DETAILS: Different sections were picked and fermented separately in open top fermenters. A combination of 4 punch-downs and pump-overs were done daily for extraction and the wine was left on the skins for two to four weeks after fermentation had completed. The different components were all aged in barrels for 12 months, before a rigorous barrel selection and blending process was followed to blend the final wine. To perfect the blend, about 10% whole-bunch fermented 2020 Shiraz was blended in to provide freshness and grip to the wine. After this, the wine spent a further 12 months in barrel before bottling.
