Key Features

  • MOQ 5 Bottles
  • Grape Variety: The Family Vineyards Chardonnay is made entirely from Chardonnay grapes. Chardonnay is known for its versatility and ability to express different styles depending on the winemaking and terroir.
  • Vineyard Sourcing: The grapes are sourced from Newton Johnson’s Family Vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This cool-climate region is well-suited for Chardonnay, as the cooler temperatures help preserve acidity and enhance the complexity of the fruit flavors.
  • Winemaking Techniques: The 2022 Chardonnay is crafted using traditional winemaking methods. This typically includes whole-cluster pressing, fermentation in French oak barrels, and aging on the lees (dead yeast cells). The use of oak barrels adds complexity and integrates flavors, while lees aging contributes to the wine’s texture and richness.
  • Tasting Notes: The 2022 vintage is expected to offer a complex and elegant flavor profile. Common tasting notes may include citrus fruits like lemon and lime, ripe stone fruits such as peach and apricot, and subtle hints of vanilla and toast from the oak. There may also be mineral or flinty notes, adding to the wine's complexity.
  • Structure and Body: The wine typically features a medium to full body with a creamy, rounded texture. The acidity is well-balanced, providing freshness and vibrancy while supporting the wine’s rich fruit flavors.
  • Aging Potential: Given its balanced structure and complexity, the 2022 Chardonnay has good aging potential. It can develop further over several years, with its flavors evolving and integrating more fully.

Grapes from three blocks, two north-facing and one south-facing. Matured for 11 months in 228- and 500-litre barrels, 25% new. Aromatics are still very primary with notes of citrus, oatmeal, a hint of vanilla and some flinty reduction. The palate is intense but not overly weighty – extra-concentrated fruit and scintillating acidity before a savoury finish. Pure, energetic and beautifully poised, this is years off drinking at its best. Alc: 13%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100

‘Blending three different components from both sides of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, this is a beautifully judged Chardonnay from a South African master of the variety. Voluptuous and textured, yet focused and energetic at the same time, it has struck match top notes, 22% new oak, citrus and vanilla spice flavours and a pithy, salty finish. 2024-30’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 95/100

‘A little popcorn toasty but in a good way – fresh, buttery, salty popcorn. Golden apples and lots of vibrant energy with mouth-watering tang of lime pickle, salt and tamarind. Great length. 2023-2028’ - Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20
